Gone Fishing

June 30th, 2010

I’m actually not going fishing. While I love the idea of being out on the water in a boat with a fishing rod and a cooler of iced beverages, I have to in all honesty admit I simply don’t have the patience for the sport. But I am however, as of July, traveling around the country visiting family and friends for the remainder of the summer.

Since August of 2009, I have had a lot of fun blogging about a variety of parenting issues, baby furniture and baby gear products before finding a focus that really made me happy - sharing my boy nursery ideas and girl nursery decorating themes.  During the course of my baby blogging adventures, I had some help from personal friends and fellow bloggers: Emily, Krista, Vicky and Lisa, thanks for your all of your help, enthusiasm, input and encouragement. It is appreciated.

Hopefully I will back in the fall with more great décor tips and nursery design ideas. Until then, I hope all of you out there, along with your wonderful families, have a terrific summer.

The ABCs of Designing a Nursery on a Budget

March 30th, 2010

Preparing for a new arrival is an exciting time in a family’s life. When you start to imagine the little person you are planning the nursery for, most likely the first thing that will spring to mind is all of the things your child is going to need. You want to design a beautiful nursery that is welcoming and charming but not if it’s going to cost a lot of money. But it doesn’t have to. There are ways to create your baby’s first room while on a budget and still transform it into a place that you can be proud of.

ABC Palette

One of the quickest (and cheapest) ways to decorate a room is to paint. If the nursery is to be your child’s permanent room and you don’t want to have to paint in again within the next three to five years, choose a color that will grow with your child. Use versatile colors. When designing a gender-neutral nursery, select colors like the ones shown here from Sherwin-Williams. If you know whether you are expecting a boy or a girl, you can opt for the more traditional colors like blue or pink.

One of the cheapest ways to dress up a room is to paint. And it can make such a big difference! If you want the design to grow with your child, don’t choose anything too babyish. This is especially true for boys. For my son’s room, I chose a patriot red, white, and blue theme. Not only can I use these same colors in my son’s room for years to come, but some of the things I’ve bought to decorate with would also work well in a little girl’s room if later we have a girl.

Most of your budget will be spent on furniture, since it tends to be the most expensive component of decorating a nursery. Measure the room to give you an exact idea of the how much space you have to work with. Knowing the size of the nursery will help you to prioritize what you need in order to make it all fit.

The crib is the focal point of the room. Shop around for a crib that you like and is affordable. You’ll be able to find one under $100.00. The Dream On Me Bethany 2-in-1 Crib in Espresso has simple lines that can be adapted to a number of décor styles including contemporary and country. A great way to stretch your baby furniture dollars is to buy multipurpose furniture like the crib that can be converted to a toddler bed.

The same principle applies to changing tables. Particularly if your on a budget, you might think you’ll just make do with any flat surface like the couch or the floor. But a change table that can also be used as a dresser will be worth it in the long run, because it saves unnecessary stooping or bending yourself into an uncomfortable position. The Berg Furniture Oslo Three Drawer Dresser and Changing Table is designed to work as both a change table and a dresser.

Many of us on a budget immediately think of combing the second hand stores for those treasures we need for bargain prices. However, it is not recommended when buying a crib or a crib mattress. Because technologies and standards are constantly changing, for safety’s sake and other health considerations, plan on purchasing brand new items. When you buy new, you can register the products and should there be any recalls, notices or product updates you should know about, the manufacturer will contact you. If you do find a second hand bargain you just can’t refuse, make sure that the crib you are purchasing meets all current safety standards.

For those expecting parents who opt not to know the gender of their child or for parents who would like to decorate the nursery in a gender-specific way, the Dream On Me Alphabet Animals 4-Piece Baby Crib Bedding Set will be an ideal choice. Especially if you intend on choosing a theme, the crib bedding pattern in a good place to start. This crib bedding set offers a number of theme options, including the alphabet, jungle animals, frogs and pets.

Once you have the basics – crib, crib bedding, crib mattress and a changing table – you can spend the remainder of your budget on accessorizing. It doesn’t have to cost much: stencil your baby’s name on the wall the crib will be placed; add an ABCs border to the walls of the room; create your own wall art from a collage of animal postcards in mat frames made from white or black cardboard. Seek out bargains at a lighting store for an animal or alphabet themed lamp. If you’re a sewer or you know someone who is, fabric ends can be great potential sources of economical curtains or another type of creative window treatment.

Chocolate Dreams for a Baby Girl

February 15th, 2010

Chocolate cake with pink icing or strawberries dipped in chocolate or chocolate mousse paired with raspberry parfait – there is no denying that chocolate, espresso or other rich browns go well with any shade of pink, pastel or bold. By choosing contemporary style baby furniture with clean lines and a rich chocolate finish paired with a pink color scheme, you can create a delicious nursery that will be both functional and beautiful to look at.

Pink Palette

Our color palette (from Behr) will of course be pink. Deeper tones will make the chocolate colors in the nursery appear richer.

When designing a nursery, your immediate baby furniture requirements:

  • a crib
  • crib bedding
  • a changing table
  • a rocker, armchair or other type of comfy chair such as a recliner
  • clothing storage such as a dresser, a chest of drawers and/or an armoire

The Babyletto Newhaven Pine Wood 4-in-1 Convertible Canopy Crib Set in Dark Chocolate displays perfect contemporary style. It has the added appeal of being a canopy crib, allowing you to customize it with pink or chocolate draperies to create a unique, warm and intimate environment for your baby girl. Because it comes with a changing table/dresser combo, it will also be kinder to your budget.

The Go Mama Go Designs Wonder Bumpers Pink & Chocolate 38 Pack is intended to fit cribs with the standard number of rails, both round and flat up to 3 inches in diameter or width. Instead of regular, rectangular bumper panels these soft, malleable vertical bumpers are designed to increase air flow, keeping baby more comfortable and the bedding a little fresher. The Go Mama Go Designs Pink & Chocolate Collection includes a bed sheet, blanket and chocolate dust ruffle.

Having a comfortable and snug place to sit while you feed your child is important. The Dutailier The Comfort Recliner Adagio Prestige Glider will also make a great story time chair. If she doesn’t want it in her room as she grows older, it’s one of those armchairs that you can always find room for in another part of your home.

While you want the nursery to be pretty, it must be practical as well. Give careful thought to how to incorporate storage solutions to the room that will grow with your child. Anything with drawers like the South Shore Furniture Back Bay Dark Chocolate Double Dresser or the South Shore Furniture Back Bay Dark Chocolate Wardrobe Armoire automatically adds functionality to any living space.

Unisex Nursery Featuring Stokke Cribs

February 1st, 2010

For those expecting parents who opt not to know the gender of their child or for parents who would like to decorate the nursery in a non-gender specific way, creating a unisex nursery is the way to go. While it can appear to be easier to decorate a nursery especially for a baby girl or baby boy, all the elements are the same – you will need baby furniture, a comfy chair and soft lighting and a design plan to pull it all together. Rather than choosing a “pink” or “blue” theme, choose a theme based on other colors, textures and shapes or generic themes like jungle animals, the alphabet and nature.

When choosing baby furniture for a gender neutral nursery, the Stokke crib is a perfect place to start. With its smart contemporary style and elegant oval shape, Stokke cribs are designed to provide a safe and comfortable sleeping environment for a baby. They are also designed to grow with the child until he or she turns seven (or thereabouts). A Stokke crib can be converted from a crib to a toddler’s bed to two chairs (with additional parts purchased separately), which makes it extremely versatile in addition to being a wise investment.

Each Stokke crib is constructed of cultivated beechwood from a sustainable forest, making it a strong, solid, durable and environmentally-friendly product. Because of the unique design and shape of the crib, Stokke offers two types of crib mattresses, both foam and organic mattresses that are made to fit. They also offer crib bedding in a select number of colors and patterns – everything you need to make your baby’s crib comfy and cozy.

Gender neutral colors include yellows and greens, as well as neutral colors such as beige, white, cream and earth tones like taupe, sage and umber. For accent colors, simply select deeper shades or complementary tones of the main color you have chosen for the nursery walls. To make the room visually interesting, select two complementary colors, one light and the other bold, separating them with decorative molding or wallpaper border depicting the theme you selected.

Once the walls have been painted and the furniture arranged to your liking, you can reserve the right to accessorize to your heart’s content. Everything from lamps to wall art to area rugs and window treatments are available in patterns and colors that will be ideal for a unisex nursery featuring a beautiful Stokke crib.

Zooing it Right

January 5th, 2010

Today we’re going to design a zoo themed toddler boy’s room that will have an adventurous appeal that is sure to last until they move on to “big boy’s” (a.k.a. twin) bed. It’s a great theme for a toddler’s room because it involves animals, which can be layered throughout the room in a number of inventive ways, through the use of borders, stencils, murals, bedding and accessories, including wall art. To create the feeling that he’s spending a day at the zoo, here are a few ideas to get you started.

Color Choices

Not only because this is a boy’s room, I’ve chosen to start with blue because it is a versatile color that will be a perfect backdrop for our zoo animals. From deep blue to softer shades, this range of blues (from Benjamin Moore) also matches the area rug and the bedding selected to produce our zoo themed toddler’s room.

The Dream On Me Jenny Lind Toddler Bed in Cherry, while it does include decorative elements, can actually be used for a boy’s or girl’s room. While the bed isn’t specifically zoo-theme related, the turned spindles of the headboard and footboard, combined with the side rails create the illusion of the “bars” of the lion’s or monkey’s cage.

The room is designed with replacing the bed in mind. When your son is ready for a twin bed, you won’t have to redecorate all over again. The same principle applies to the bedding. When you no longer need the toddler bed and the crib bedding it uses like the BeBe Chic Monkey Business Collection Baby Crib Bedding Set, you can upgrade to twin bedding then.

A nightstand and dresser makes the room more functional with drawers and shelving space. The nightstand is also an ideal place to put a lamp, a book or other boy treasures, while the dresser is a must-have furniture piece for clothes and accessories. The Young America by Stanley GenAmerica Merlot Single Drawer Nightstand and the Young America by Stanley GenAmerica Merlot Single Dresser are good choices for a room designed to grow with him.

The area rug, featuring primary colors which are always a plus in a child’s room, ties everything together. The Fun Rugs California Kids Carved Zoo Kee Doo Rug makes the room warm and inviting, enhancing the wall palette and complementing the colors of the bedding.
