Designing a Jungle Themed Gender Neutral Nursery

May 19th, 2010

A jungle theme is ideal for a gender neutral nursery because colors associated with a rainforest, safari or jungle animals tend to be bright, colorful and larger-than-life. It also allows you to fill the space with fun, whimsical shapes and colors. Add a jungle animal border or a mural to the walls; accessorize with an elephant lamp; an amusing area. Since it’s the space you and your baby will share for the first two years of your baby’s life, have fun designing your nursery and go wild.

Begin at the Beginning

When designing a gender neutral nursery, the best place to begin is with color. Gender neutral colors include yellows and greens, as well as the classic neutral colors like as beige, white, cream and tan. Earth tones such as taupe, sage and umber are also popular choices.

For accent colors, simply select deeper shades or complementary tones of the main color you have chosen for the nursery walls.

A wall mural or wall art depicting a family of lions, giraffes or hippos will make the room visually interesting.

All Together Now

When choosing baby furniture for a gender neutral nursery, select a crib, changing table and dresser that have an uncluttered appearance. This doesn’t mean you can’t go traditional, if that’s the style that you prefer – just choose a traditional style like Shaker or Louis Philippe that is renowned for its lack of ornamentation.

Select jungle themed crib bedding that matches the colors used on the walls.

Accessories are not just those little finishing touches that make your baby’s room unique. Accessorizing wisely is a great way to harmonize all of the elements in the nursery, from the walls to the baby furniture to the curtains on the window. For window treatments, upholstered chairs and accent pillows, mix and match fabrics such as faux fur with crisp cotton. This is another way to give your gender neutral nursery an additional layer of texture.

Modern Pizzazz for a Gender-Neutral Nursery

March 29th, 2010

A modern or contemporary style nursery gives the room a spacious, uncluttered appearance. When selecting baby furniture, concentrate on clean, sharp lines, minimalist profiles and lighter woods and finishes. It is an ideal style for a nursery that is smaller or awkwardly-sized because it can make the room seem larger and more spacious. Since modern style focuses on the functional and practical, it can also work in smaller-sized spaceS, since each piece of furniture should have a specific reason for being there. Because there is little or no decorative detail, it can also be an excellent way to decorate a gender-neutral nursery. When it’s time to convert the nursery into a toddler’s room, a modern or contemporary design is very adaptable.

Modern Nursery

Choose a color palette (from Benjamin Moore) that is both neutral and soothing. By sticking to beiges, taupe, whites, grays or tans, the nursery will appear fresh and bright. If you feel adventurous, you can create an accent wall using your main wall color and one or two other complementary colors to paint stripes. You could also opt to paint one wall in a bold accent color that will make the room “pop.”

The Child Craft Falls Village 3-in-1 Convertible Modern Wood Crib in Matte White has all the criteria for a modern style nursery. The crib’s lines are clean, the overall form or profile is simple and the finish is soft matte (not shiny) white.

If you prefer darker colored furniture, the same can be said for the Aldi Juvenile Loft Crib, with its clean lines and simply-shaped crib ends. Although it has a dark wood finish, it is definitely modern in both style and design.

Clean lines and simple forms should also apply to the crib bedding you select for your nursery. The BeBe Chic Mod Squad 4 Piece Set has an asymmetrical pattern that is ideally suited to both a gender-neutral nursery and a modern style décor.

The focus of modern style is on form and function. Once you have chosen the three basic pieces of baby furniture you will need – the crib, the changing table and a dresser, chest of drawers or some other kind of storage like an armoire – add other furniture pieces sparingly to your nursery.

The two-tone finish of the Babyletto Modo 3-Drawer Wood Changer in Two-tone Espresso & White will perfectly match the crib, whether you choose one with a white or dark wood finish. The whole point of modern design is less is more. Even though this changing table has very simple lines, it has a unique yet charming appearance.

Match the Berg Furniture Oslo Nine Drawer Dresser to the crib if you have chosen a white one for your gender-neutral nursery.

For a nursery that has baby furniture with a dark wood finish, the Aldi Juvenile Maxx 3 Drawer Dresser is sleek and angular, with spare lines and a clean, simple profile. The brushed stainless steel drawer handles are definitely a characteristic of modern style.

Create a cozy corner with the Dutailier Liverpool Leather Glider and Ottoman where you can feed baby in comfort. It will also be a great place for storytime.

For a splash of fun and a touch of color to complement the crib bedding, add the Fun Rugs Yellow Fun Shag Rug to your nursery.

The trick to designing a modern style nursery that will look both comfortable and inviting, is to counteract the simple angular lines with crib bedding, artwork and window treatments that have patterns typical to modern forms and styles such as stripes, circles, blocks and asymmetrical shapes. Incorporating a non-specific theme such as the alphabet, numbers or artic or jungle animals, will create visual interest to the room and make the nursery “personal” to the little you’re welcoming into the world.

Pirates Sail the Seven Seas

March 3rd, 2010

It seems that both boys and girls are attracted to these rascally characters, so swash buckling pirates can be the ideal theme for gender neutral nursery. Whatever the reason you choose not to know the gender of your child, you’ll be able to get a head start on preparing the room for your newborn. Just by choosing a color scheme (from Behr) that is not pink or blue, you can make your nursery an adventurous and whimsical place for either a baby girl or boy. And nothing can create an exciting and bold environment quite like pirates can.

Pirate Palette

After painting the walls with your main color, consider adding a tall ship mural or paint a treasure map on one wall. You can opt for using stencils to create a unique pirate themed border for your baby’s room. There are many pirate-related themes you use as a motif for your border, including anchors, treasure chests, one-eyed pirates and colorful fish.

Your little pirate is going to need someplace to sleep. Crib sets typically include other necessary pieces of baby furniture, such as a change table, in addition to the crib. Purchasing baby nursery furniture in a set can save you money in the long run, since you are not buying each piece separately. Another viable option for furnishing a nursery, particularly if you are on a budget, is to comparison shop for the crib, the changing table and dresser; oftentimes you can as much money when buying a crib set, but this way you will be sure of getting exactly what you want.

White furniture is generally associated with girl nurseries while espresso, java and black finishes are popular for a boy’s nursery. For a gender neutral pirate themed nursery, choose a crib in a light to medium wood finish, such as pine, oak or birch. However, cribs like the Status Furniture Richmond Stages Convertible Baby Crib, shown here in rubbed black, are ideal for a more traditional style nursery. This crib could easily see your little one through to college since it can be converted from a crib to a daybed to a full bed.

The Cotton Tale Pirates Cove 4-Piece Baby Crib Bedding Set features plenty of pirates ahoy. When accessorizing the nursery, you can use the ship, palm tree, anchor and parrot motifs of the crib bedding as inspiration.

Purchasing a dresser that can be used as a change table can help you save some money, because you won’t have to buy a separate changing table.

Don’t forget to add the Cotton Tale Pirates Cove Baby Nursery Lamp and Shade.

Around the World: a unisex nursery design

February 23rd, 2010

There are many reasons for not wanting to know the gender of your child. Or even if you do know or plan on knowing, you might prefer to design a nursery for your newborn that is not gender specific. The easiest way to get started is to avoid themes such as airplanes, trains and fire engines or fairies, butterflies and ballerinas, and of course, the colors pink and blues. Choose instead a theme like world travel, which will allow you to add old world touches like framed maps, a globe or trunk-shaped toy chest.

Select softer, more neutral-toned colors. Yellows, greens, light browns and tans are all good choices. Any one of these shades (from Behr) has the added benefit of adding a calming and tranquil feel to the room. Or if you would like to go bolder, colors like gold, orange and even red are great alternatives for a non-gender specific nursery.

When furnishing your nursery, select baby furniture that is not too light or too dark, since white is often associated with baby girls while black is a popular choice for a boy’s nursery. Cribs like the Orbelle Convertible Mini Portable Crib N Bed in Natural that have a natural or light to medium wood finish are ideal for a non-gender specific nursery design. This crib is very multipurpose – place a changing pad on top of the set of drawers and you have a handy change table; the crib converts to a toddler bed with under-bed storage; and the set of drawers detaches from the unit and can be used as a nightstand.

“Neutral” themed crib bedding is a must in a unisex nursery. The colors of the Bebe Chic Around the World Baby Crib Bedding Set are warm while the antique map pattern of the crib bumper makes this set visually interesting.

Any way you can add storage to a nursery is always a good thing. The Badger Basket Natural Barrel Top Toy Chest has the simple and economical shape of a classic steamer trunk.

The Fun Rugs Supreme Collection Kids World Map Rug uses all of the colors that the crib bedding set does. You can also tie this area rug into the walls by a wallpaper border with a map or other world travel theme.
