Things to Consider before Buying a Toddler Bed

April 9th, 2010

As soon as they’re big enough to climb up and potentially out, it will be obvious they’re growing out of their crib and new sleeping arrangements will need to be made. When your child no longer needs a crib, parents are faced with two main choices – a toddler bed or a twin bed. Buying a toddler bed for your child can make the transition from a crib to a twin bed much easier. Purchasing a twin bed saves you from having to buy another bed in 1½ to 3 years. Since a twin bed can appear to be too big for a small child, many parents struggle with what to choose, safety issues causing the most concern. Essentially a toddler bed gives the child assurance and the parents peace of mind.

Toddler Bed Fast Facts

The sleeping area of a toddler bed is the same size of a standard crib and most kinds of toddler beds use a crib mattress. A toddler bed sits almost on the floor, which is what is so appealing about it. Toddler beds have the appearance and freedom of a twin bed, but are scaled down to provide a toddler with a safe sleeping environment. Even so, many types of toddler beds include some kind of railing for added protection and to prevent the child from falling out.

If you’re reluctant to buy a piece of furniture for your child’s bedroom that has such a short life span, buy a toddler bed that is not theme-related, as these beds tend to be more expensive than a standard toddler’s bed. You might also want to skip any extra features such as under-bed storage for the same reason.

Toddler beds are often cheaper than twin beds. Usually they use a crib mattress, so it will save you from having to buy a new one. Many types of toddler beds also let you make use of the crib bedding you already have on hand.

Other Options to Consider

Buy a convertible crib. Convertible cribs are designed to grow with your child, from 0 to approximately 5 years of age. Some types of convertible cribs need a conversion kit – check to see if this is applicable to the crib you are considering purchasing.

Remove one side of the crib and let your child get used to the freedom of sleeping without being enclosed in on all sides.

Buy safety rails for a new twin bed or a twin bed you already own. When purchasing a new twin bed, choose a type of bed that stands low to the floor such as a low-profile platform bed like the Young America by Stanley myHaven Twin Low Post Cottage Panel Bed or a captains bed. Captains beds are basically a platform bed on top of a set of drawers, but they tend to sit close to the ground, depending on the number of drawers included in the bed’s design.

Room for Adventure: designing a boy’s room that will grow with him

November 12th, 2009

He’s ready to ditch the toddler bed and upgrade to “big boy’s room.” Now is the time to design a room for your son that will grow with him and keep you from having to start from scratch every couple of years or so. Sure, their likes, dislikes, tastes and personal preferences change faster than a speeding bullet, but there are ways to design a bedroom that will grow with him, saving you time and money in the long run.

Themes

Olive Kids Out of This World Comforter

A popular way to decorate a child’s room, either for a boy or girl, is to pick a theme. However, since from three years of age and on, little boys are in the business of growing into bigger boys, there is the danger that they will quickly outgrow the theme you have chosen. While some themes such as pirates, cowboys, outer space, baseball, racing cars and dinosaurs have a timeless appeal, to design a room that will grow with your son, limit the theme to items that can be easily replaced. Should your son outgrow his room’s original theme, if you have chosen space exploration themed bedding and matching curtains, these are easier to change than having to scrape off rocket ship wallpaper and redo the walls.

Walls

Make it colorful but don’t base the room’s décor on your son’s current favorite color in case he changes his mind next week. If you would like to include his favorite color, use it as an accent color rather than for the whole room. Avoid papering the room in a particular theme. Use a border in a particular theme instead.

To create a space that will grow with your child, the same principle applies when decorating the walls. You can advance the theme throughout the room in non-permanent ways by adding posters and pictures that can be changed or updated as required.

Furniture

Select a bedroom set that is well-constructed, durable and stylish. Choose furniture in classic colors like black, dark brown or espresso.

Select as many pieces on casters as possible. This allows you (and your son) the freedom to alter the room’s configuration as his needs change. It will also make it easier to add certain pieces, like a computer desk or TV armoire when he wants someplace to study or play a computer game.

Include lots of storage options. Freeing up floor space for play and exploration is a must in a young boy’s room.

Organizing Your Child’s Room

November 9th, 2009

Early Childhood Resources 3 Tier Kids Toy Storage Organizer with 12 Bins

Whether or not your are waging a constant battle to get your children to clean up their rooms or they are pretty good about keeping it tidy for the most part, you still feel that there is just too much stuff lying around. Finding a way to organize your child’s room that is good for both of you is important to keeping your house in good order. Especially now before heading into holiday season when you know they’ll be getting even more stuff, it might be a good time to do a little purging and add more storage solutions to help them stay organized and keep the room neat.

 Sorting and Purging

Since they can quickly accumulate a lot of stuff, get them to help you sort through everything. There are probably items they no longer use or like. And they are most certainly harboring treasures that they can’t part with but have been broken and are beyond repair. Separate toys, books, etc. from clothes. Put everything in piles: stuff that needs to be thrown out; things that are no longer used and can be given away; and items that just don’t belong in the room, including seasonal items like outerwear, sports equipment etc.

Storage Solutions

Little Colorado Storage Cubby

Once everything that is not staying, such as items to be put in the trash, is removed from the bedroom, you’re ready to get organized. Now that you have a better idea of what’s staying and what’s going, decide if you will need more storage options or if everything will go back into the shelves, cupboards and storage bins that are already in the room. This is also a good time to wipe everything down and sanitize surfaces while shelves, cubbies and cupboards are empty.

Like with Like

Sort the pile of things your child wants to keep into piles of similar items, for example all of the toy cars in one pile, books in another, stuffed toys in another. Decide where everything will go. Put everything back into their assigned bins or shelves. If storage bins aren’t see-through, add labels to make finding things and putting things away more convenient.

Afterwards

Encourage them to use what they have. If they have a toy chest or clothes hamper they never use, perhaps they are simply in the wrong place. Try finding a more central location that will motivate them to put dirty clothes straight into the hamper rather than dumping them on the floor or toys back in the toy box once they have finished playing. Make sure that storage bins are easy to use and that bookshelves and storage units are accessible and not blocked by other pieces of furniture.
