What to Look for in a Changing Table

May 27th, 2010

You know you need one, but especially if this is your first child, you might not know exactly what to look for. And then there is the faction that advises to skip the changing table step altogether since you won’t be using it for very long. But even if you won’t need it much past the 18 month mark, it will be well-used for other fun activities such as cutting toe nails, brushing hair and wiping your little one’s nose. Since you will be changing your baby any from 5,475 to 8,213 times during a year and a half, it’s important to select one that is comfortable for both you and your baby. Another good thing about a changing table is that it provides a safe place for you to change your child while allowing you to organize everything you need to keep close to hand.

Essentially, there are three main types of changing tables to choose from: the dresser/changing table combo; the open shelf changing table; the combination changing table. If you are the type of person that likes health, beauty and baby products conveniently handy but out of sight, select a changing table that provides hidden storage like a dresser/changing table or a combination changing table. On the other hand, if you don’t want to bother with opening and closing doors and drawers when trying to make your child dry and comfortable, pick an open shelf changing table.

The trick to choosing the “right” changing table is to select one that will be the most useful to you. Before making a final decision as to which one you’ll purchase, check the following:

  • Height – for you to be comfortable when changing a diaper, the changing table should come up to your waist
  • Orientation – Some changing tables are oriented so that you are changing your child at an angle from one side. Other types of changing tables like the Badger Basket Corner Baby Changing Table are designed so that the baby’s feet are pointing toward you. Since you are directly facing your infant it can be easier and faster when you’re changing your little one
  • Features – Some manufacturers include a changing pad with safety straps or include rails or raised sides. Other types of change tables come with different organizational features such as trays, baskets or cubbies. Pick a change table that has the right combination of safety features and organizational features that will give you the most peace of mind.

DaVinci Emily Cribs – Product Review

April 19th, 2010

If you’re looking for a crib that will blend easily with a traditional, transitional or a country décor, look no further than the Emily 4-in-1 Convertible Baby Crib by DaVinci. With a hint of sleigh bed élan, the Emily crib has soft, flowing lines, a classic, heirloom appearance and a design that allows it to grow with your baby. Emily convertible crib packages include everything you will need to convert it into a daybed or a full bed once it is no longer needed as a crib.

The most practical feature of the Emily convertible crib, is of course its ability to be converted to first a toddler bed.

Then eventually to a full size bed. An Emily convertible crib can save you from buying two different beds as your child moves from the toddler stage to the “big boy bed” stage.

Especially if you are looking for ways to make your nursery greener, DaVinci Emily convertible cribs are carefully crafted from woods from sustainable forests and wood composites. In DaVinci Emily product reviews, consumers repeatedly remark on how relatively easy the wood crib was to assemble and that it’s well-made and very sturdy.

If you live in an apartment, a condominium or would like the option of having the crib in your bedroom, consider the DaVinci Emily Mini 2-in-1 Convertible Baby Crib. While it will only convert from a crib to a twin size bed (with conversion bed rails), this mini crib has several of the main features of the standard size Emily crib. It might be the ideal space-saving solution you are looking for.

If you’re looking for matching furniture pieces, the DaVinci Emily Collection doesn’t just offer cribs. You will also be able to find other much-needed baby nursery furniture products like the Emily changing table and the Emily 4 Drawer Chest.

Traditional Style Boy’s Nursery that Really Stands Out

February 25th, 2010

Traditional Palette
The color blue is the classic the classic choice for a baby boy’s nursery. Because it’s a cool color, it can help create a tranquil, restful environment for your child. Traditional style has an understated elegance that is adaptable. While you might want to skip baby nursery furniture that has a lot of “girlie” decorative detail, a traditionally styled room has proportion and symmetry that is soothing, welcoming and inviting. By opting for other forms of blue (shown here from Behr) instead of the more classic “baby” or powder blue shades, you can design a traditional style nursery that will really stand out.

The style of crib that is probably most often linked with traditional style is the sleigh crib. Since the crib will be the focal point of the room, the Young America GenAmerica Classic Cherry Mix & Match Stationary Sleigh Side Crib is the ideal choice. It has a classic sleigh bed profile, with soft, flowing lines that makes it very appealing.

The beautiful blues of the Go Mama Go Designs Wonder Bumpers Blue Damask 38 Set are rich and vibrant and totally “un-baby blue.” The damask pattern of this crib bedding set emphasized the crib’s traditional style.

The dresser and the changing table are two other necessary nursery furniture pieces you will need. Some manufacturers offer change tables that can be repurposed as dressers or storage chests, which makes purchasing one more economical.

The Child Craft Arbor Gate Dressing Bureau in Coach Cherry displays characteristic features of Louis Philippe (a traditional sub style) that will go well with a sleigh-type crib. By placing a changing pad on top of the bureau, you’ve magically transformed it into a changing table. When it’s no longer needed, you can still continue to use this charming storage unit as a place to store toys, clothes and other accessories.

With echoes of Louis Philippe, the Young America by Stanley GenAmerica Classic Cherry Door Chest combines all of the best features of an armoire and a chest of drawers together.

For your ultimate comfort, and baby’s too, when you’re feeding your child, select the Dutailier The Comfort Recliner Dolce Prestige Glider in Microfiber or All Leather. It comes in a number of colors, allowing you to pick the one that matches your nursery décor.
