Creative Ways to Repurpose your Changing Table

May 5th, 2010

You might be an expectant parent debating about whether or not you should buy a changing table. Or you might be wondering why you bought the changing table in the first place now that your little one is a toddler and has no more need for it. Just like the convertible crib concept, some manufacturers offer consumers nursery furniture like changing tables that are designed to grow with your child. But if you’ve already bought a changing table that is not multipurpose or you are reluctant to purchase one that you might not know what to do with when it’s no longer being used, here are some suggestions for innovative ways to repurpose your baby’s changing table now or when the time comes.

A changing table is designed to hold your child while you’re standing and changing your baby, as well as the items will you need to make your baby dry and comfortable again. Since it is a piece of furniture intended for a particular purpose (changing baby) as well as storage (keeping baby products close to hand), this makes it easy to repurpose a change table for any activity that requires standing while doing a task. A changing table is the ideal height for such things as crafting, indoor gardening, repairing small household items or gift wrapping. A repurposed change table can be used virtually anywhere in your home.

A changing table like the South Shore Furniture Peek-a-boo Baby Changing Table would be the ideal candidate for a curio display case where the sides of the tabletop act as a galley rail, preventing collectibles from falling off (or from curious reaching little fingers).

A changing table with combination storage such as drawers, shelves and cubbies would handy as a crafts station or in a sewing room for organizing supplies and materials. It would also be very useful in the laundry room. The flat surface could be used for folding shirts, socks, etc. and the drawers or cubbies will keep a unsightly collection of boxes and bottles hidden from view.

By the time it reaches the kitchen the changing pad and other baby paraphernalia will be long gone. But consider using an open style changing table in the kitchen as a microwave cart or coffee station. You could also use a changing table for household tools storage, a house plant work area or a storage unit in a hallway. Or how about the most “obvious” way to reuse a changing table – in your toddler’s room as an extra place to put toys?

Designing a Green Nursery Part 3 – Buying Eco-Friendly Baby Products

April 30th, 2010

During the first months of their lives, the immune systems of infants are still developing. At this stage, they tend to be more susceptible to their environs and sometimes have difficulty in processing toxins. It is for this reason that a green nursery or an eco-friendly nursery appeals to many parents. Even for parents who are not specifically eco-conscious or are actively living sustainably, they are very interested in creating the safest and least toxic environment as possible for their new baby. Today in the third (and last) part of this mini-series, we’ll look at what it means to buy eco-friendly baby products.

It’s a well-known fact that babies tend to get a little messy. For this reason it might be tempting to purchase items like crib bedding, crib mattresses, baby blankets, pillows and clothes that stain or moisture resistant. When purchasing baby products for your green nursery, skip any thing that has been treated; especially avoid fire retardants commonly used in the making of crib mattresses.

And speaking of messy, while it might seem very labor-intensive and there’s no denying that disposable diapers are much more convenient, reusable organic cloth diapers are much kinder to the environment. While a disposable diaper may be as soft on baby’s skin, the cloth diaper, particularly some organic versions, are actually more breathable, and therefore are more comfortable for baby.

Especially since they will inevitably end up in your baby’s mouth, look for toys made of wood with non-toxic finishes or of natural fibers. For baby products like teething rings, soothers and chew toys that are often made from plastics, stay away from ones made of PVC (polyvinyl chloride), a type of plastic that can be potentially harmful to your child.

For baby products like lotions, shampoos and diaper creams, look for eco-friendly baby skin care items that don’t use harsh detergents and other potentially toxic chemicals. Ditto for any cleaning products or solutions you plan on using in your nursery and anywhere in your home that baby will come into direct contact with what is being cleaned.

It used to be more difficult to find eco friendly baby products. But it isn’t so complicated anymore. As more of us are finding ways to be kinder to the environment (and to our children and ourselves), manufacturers of baby furniture and baby products are responding by offering a variety of sustainable, eco friendly or organic baby products.

Designing a Green Nursery Part 2 – Buying Eco Friendly Furniture

April 28th, 2010

When designing a nursery, many expectant parents are concerned with avoiding products that are potentially harmful to a newborn. Strictly adhering to organic products can quickly become very expensive. A viable and cost effective alternative is to select products that use non-toxic finishes and materials for surfaces that come directly into contact with your baby. Today in the second part of this mini-series, we’ll look at what it means to buy eco-friendly baby furniture.

Many baby crib manufacturers are offering a number of smart convertible options that allow you to “repurpose” or use the crib during one or more of your child’s evolving developmental stages. Cribs and other baby products that “grow with your baby” are very appealing to parents who are looking for ways to buy fewer items and increase their commitment to sustainable living. Buying a crib or a changing table that “grows with your baby” also has the added bonus of being more cost effective and economical. When deciding what other furniture pieces you would like to include in your green nursery design, consider purchasing items like a glider, for example, that can be used in another room in your room after baby no longer needs it.

Stay away from baby cribs and other types of baby furniture that are made with plywood, particleboard, MDF (medium density fiberboard) or any other kind of wood composite (also known as engineered woods). Even though they are made of recycled wood products (a good thing), they typically use toxic chemicals (a bad thing) like formaldehyde in the formation process. While the Tulip Panda 3 Drawer Single Dresser does include MDF, it is made of formaldehyde-free glue and other environmental friendly materials such as bamboo.

Choose an organic crib mattress for your baby’s crib. Select organic crib bedding with a theme (if you have chosen one) to match your décor. The Summer Infant Sleepy Safari 4 Piece Organic Crib Bedding Set is made of organically grown fabrics and natural dyes. It has a non-gender specific jungle theme and color scheme perfectly suited to a green nursery. In addition to organic pillow cases and coverings, look for baby pillows stuffed with synthetic-free latex, organic cotton, untreated wool or kapok (a type of plant fiber).

Particularly for items that you will need for only a relatively short period of time, it’s good to know about specific baby furniture pieces that are designed to be used for other things once it is no longer needed for its original purpose. The Badger Basket Company offers a uniquely shaped changing table that is simple, compact and ultra-functional, but above all, looks smart as well.

Since this change table fits neatly and discretely into the corner of the room, it could be the ideal decorating solution for a small nursery or an awkwardly-shaped room.

The unique design of the Badger Basket corner changing table also allows you to change the diaper while facing your child. Unlike most changing tables which have you changing the child while standing mostly to the side, when using the Badger Basket corner changing table, your baby’s feet are conveniently pointing directly towards you.

Things to Consider before Buying a Toddler Bed

April 9th, 2010

As soon as they’re big enough to climb up and potentially out, it will be obvious they’re growing out of their crib and new sleeping arrangements will need to be made. When your child no longer needs a crib, parents are faced with two main choices – a toddler bed or a twin bed. Buying a toddler bed for your child can make the transition from a crib to a twin bed much easier. Purchasing a twin bed saves you from having to buy another bed in 1½ to 3 years. Since a twin bed can appear to be too big for a small child, many parents struggle with what to choose, safety issues causing the most concern. Essentially a toddler bed gives the child assurance and the parents peace of mind.

Toddler Bed Fast Facts

The sleeping area of a toddler bed is the same size of a standard crib and most kinds of toddler beds use a crib mattress. A toddler bed sits almost on the floor, which is what is so appealing about it. Toddler beds have the appearance and freedom of a twin bed, but are scaled down to provide a toddler with a safe sleeping environment. Even so, many types of toddler beds include some kind of railing for added protection and to prevent the child from falling out.

If you’re reluctant to buy a piece of furniture for your child’s bedroom that has such a short life span, buy a toddler bed that is not theme-related, as these beds tend to be more expensive than a standard toddler’s bed. You might also want to skip any extra features such as under-bed storage for the same reason.

Toddler beds are often cheaper than twin beds. Usually they use a crib mattress, so it will save you from having to buy a new one. Many types of toddler beds also let you make use of the crib bedding you already have on hand.

Other Options to Consider

Buy a convertible crib. Convertible cribs are designed to grow with your child, from 0 to approximately 5 years of age. Some types of convertible cribs need a conversion kit – check to see if this is applicable to the crib you are considering purchasing.

Remove one side of the crib and let your child get used to the freedom of sleeping without being enclosed in on all sides.

Buy safety rails for a new twin bed or a twin bed you already own. When purchasing a new twin bed, choose a type of bed that stands low to the floor such as a low-profile platform bed like the Young America by Stanley myHaven Twin Low Post Cottage Panel Bed or a captains bed. Captains beds are basically a platform bed on top of a set of drawers, but they tend to sit close to the ground, depending on the number of drawers included in the bed’s design.

Tips for Buying a Glider

April 7th, 2010

On Tuesday we talked about how to buy a rocking chair. Today we’ll discuss buying a glider, what to look for and the different features that might interest you. Tips for the best way to shop for a glider rocker will help you decide what will be best for you and your overall nursery design. It will also come in handy when you need to narrow down your choices. Unlike other pieces of baby furniture such as the crib or a changing table, glider, once its nursery duty is done, can be used in other areas of your home. If this idea appeals to you, you will want to select a glider blends in with the décor style and color scheme of the room it will eventually end up in once it is no longer needed in the nursery.

Choose a style and color that will complement your nursery décor.

Select a glider with upholstery that is easy to launder or can be easily spot cleaned.

Glider rockers are available in a variety of models and offer a number of different features, like the Dutailier Juvenile 173 Series Fully Upholstered Swivel Glider that includes swivel capabilities. Give some thought to the kinds of features that will be most useful to you. Especially if your nursery glider rocker will not be near a dresser or side table, you might a glider that includes pouches or other types of hidden storage so that you will have a place to tuck things when you need a free hand.

Consider purchasing a rocker glider with a locking mechanism, particularly if there are younger children and/or pets in the household. When selecting a glider that includes an ottoman, make sure that the ottoman also has a locking mechanism.

Depending on a number of factors including how tall you are, the length of your legs and the angle of the glider ottoman, a stationary ottoman might be a more comfortable fit.

Check to see that the rocker glider is well constructed, doesn’t have any rough edges and has a non-toxic finish. Ensure that any mechanisms or levers are within easy reach and are user-friendly.

Tomorrow we’ll put the spotlight on a company that has been making glider rockers for about 30 years.

Tips for Buying a Rocker

April 6th, 2010

Yesterday we explored the pros and cons of buying a traditional rocker or glider for your nursery. Today, we will discuss tips for buying a rocking chair for your baby’s first room. A rocking chair has a comfortable and appealing profile that is enchanting and welcoming. It won’t be just a place to sit when feeding your child or trying to get your baby back to sleep. A rocking chair will grow with both of you when you read to them or as you watch your toddler play. Whether it’s been in the family for several generations or it just caught your eye when browsing online, a rocking chair has an heirloom look about it that you’re sure to treasure for awhile.

Decide if you want the chair just in the nursery or if at some point you will use it in another room of your home. You will want to match it in style and color.

You will have to get in and out of the rocking chair with a baby in your arms that may be squirming, crying, fussing, etc. Test out the rocker to see you can get in and out of it without much effort.

Especially since you will be spending a fair amount of time in the chair, make sure it is comfortable. For a rocking chair to be comfy, ensure it has the following qualities.

  • Seating area should provide comfort and support
  • Seating area should be low enough when you sit in it to offer you proper elbow support
  • Armrests need to be wide enough to rest your arms easily and comfortably without any strain
  • Both seat and backrest should provide firmness, flexibility and support, particularly to your lower back

The rocker must rock back and forth soundlessly – no squeaks allowed. It might sound like a little squeak but it could be just the thing that prevents your baby from falling easily back to sleep.

Make sure it is well-made and that quality woodworking techniques have been used. Spindles and joints should be tight; edges should be smooth; and the skis (or rockers) should be in proportion to the body of the rocking chair.

When purchasing seat cushions for your rocking chair, choose ones with covers that can easily be laundered.

Come back and visit tomorrow when I’ll give you tips on how to select a glider chair for your nursery.

Rocker vs. Glider – Buying the Best Chair for your Nursery

April 5th, 2010

Having a chair as part of your nursery interior design is important for many reasons. It won’t be just a place to sit when feeding your child or rocking your baby to sleep. It will be the “bonding place” so for this reason alone, it should be the most comfortable and the best type of chair that you can afford. It is also the most likely place you will read to your child. The nursery chair you choose will be where you’ll make memories that will last a lifetime. A traditional rocker has a classic design with a charming, timeless appeal while a glider is typically upholstered. However, before making a final decision whether you will buy a rocker or a glider for your nursery, here are some things to consider.

Traditional Rocker – Pros

No matter whether they are antiques or not, rockers have the cherished appearance of a family heirloom.

They are very adaptable to a number of décor styles

They don’t include any mechanisms that can wear out.

Traditional Rocker – Cons

Since the seating area tends to be more angled and a little lower than a typical glider or even an armchair, a traditional rocker can be awkward to get in and out of easily. Especially when you’re feeding or trying to put your baby to sleep in the middle of the night, and you’re half asleep yourself, a chair with a seating area that is higher off the ground may be more useful.

Particularly when playing on the floor near the rocker, pets and children could get arms, legs or tails caught underneath the rockers if the chair is moved forward or backward.

If the floor is uncarpeted or the rocking chair is older, any squeaks can be troublesome (and sound very loud at two in the morning) when trying to settle your child back to sleep.

Most types of traditional rocking chairs do not come with seat cushions. They will have to be purchased separately. Particularly if you’re prone to backache, you will also want a back cushion.

Glider Rocker – Pros

Gliders have a smooth, soothing movement that some parents prefer to the more pronounced back and forth motion of a rocker.

Some types of gliders include a locking mechanism, rendering them stationary and preventing curious little fingers from being caught in the glider.

Gliders come in so many style, options and fabric choices that it is easier to customize it to both your nursery décor and you personal comfort level. Some models include ottomans that can either be purchased separately or are part of a set.

Glider rockers come with a number of different features, such as pouches, removable armrest pads or storage compartments.

Glider Rocker – Cons

Hinges, slides and other mechanisms associated with the glider rocker are prone to rusting and general wear and tear.

A glider that includes an ottoman should be “test driven” just to ensure that it will be useful to you. For example, you might find that due to a combination of factors including how tall you are, a stationary ottoman would be more practical for you.

Many types of gliders are shipped ready-to-assemble. Since safety is a high priority and can be dependent on how the chair has been put together, if you’re not confident in your DIY abilities, plan on asking for help from a friend or family member.

Modern Pizzazz for a Gender-Neutral Nursery

March 29th, 2010

A modern or contemporary style nursery gives the room a spacious, uncluttered appearance. When selecting baby furniture, concentrate on clean, sharp lines, minimalist profiles and lighter woods and finishes. It is an ideal style for a nursery that is smaller or awkwardly-sized because it can make the room seem larger and more spacious. Since modern style focuses on the functional and practical, it can also work in smaller-sized spaceS, since each piece of furniture should have a specific reason for being there. Because there is little or no decorative detail, it can also be an excellent way to decorate a gender-neutral nursery. When it’s time to convert the nursery into a toddler’s room, a modern or contemporary design is very adaptable.

Modern Nursery

Choose a color palette (from Benjamin Moore) that is both neutral and soothing. By sticking to beiges, taupe, whites, grays or tans, the nursery will appear fresh and bright. If you feel adventurous, you can create an accent wall using your main wall color and one or two other complementary colors to paint stripes. You could also opt to paint one wall in a bold accent color that will make the room “pop.”

The Child Craft Falls Village 3-in-1 Convertible Modern Wood Crib in Matte White has all the criteria for a modern style nursery. The crib’s lines are clean, the overall form or profile is simple and the finish is soft matte (not shiny) white.

If you prefer darker colored furniture, the same can be said for the Aldi Juvenile Loft Crib, with its clean lines and simply-shaped crib ends. Although it has a dark wood finish, it is definitely modern in both style and design.

Clean lines and simple forms should also apply to the crib bedding you select for your nursery. The BeBe Chic Mod Squad 4 Piece Set has an asymmetrical pattern that is ideally suited to both a gender-neutral nursery and a modern style décor.

The focus of modern style is on form and function. Once you have chosen the three basic pieces of baby furniture you will need – the crib, the changing table and a dresser, chest of drawers or some other kind of storage like an armoire – add other furniture pieces sparingly to your nursery.

The two-tone finish of the Babyletto Modo 3-Drawer Wood Changer in Two-tone Espresso & White will perfectly match the crib, whether you choose one with a white or dark wood finish. The whole point of modern design is less is more. Even though this changing table has very simple lines, it has a unique yet charming appearance.

Match the Berg Furniture Oslo Nine Drawer Dresser to the crib if you have chosen a white one for your gender-neutral nursery.

For a nursery that has baby furniture with a dark wood finish, the Aldi Juvenile Maxx 3 Drawer Dresser is sleek and angular, with spare lines and a clean, simple profile. The brushed stainless steel drawer handles are definitely a characteristic of modern style.

Create a cozy corner with the Dutailier Liverpool Leather Glider and Ottoman where you can feed baby in comfort. It will also be a great place for storytime.

For a splash of fun and a touch of color to complement the crib bedding, add the Fun Rugs Yellow Fun Shag Rug to your nursery.

The trick to designing a modern style nursery that will look both comfortable and inviting, is to counteract the simple angular lines with crib bedding, artwork and window treatments that have patterns typical to modern forms and styles such as stripes, circles, blocks and asymmetrical shapes. Incorporating a non-specific theme such as the alphabet, numbers or artic or jungle animals, will create visual interest to the room and make the nursery “personal” to the little you’re welcoming into the world.
