Armoires for Kids

December 24th, 2009

When designing and decorating your child’s room and making a list of furnishings you want to include, an armoire might not seem like a priority. But there are several reasons why an armoire is a good choice. Since most armoires are multi-purpose, if you buy one for your child’s nursery, it can adapt as your child grows, providing many years of storage, from toddler to teen, for toys, clothes, shoes and accessories, no matter the developmental stage.

A nursery armoire is ideal for storing clothes, blankies, bibs, shoes and other accessories; even toys. As they get older, the armoire’s multiple compartments become more and more practical. Especially if it can accommodate a television or computer, this type of armoire becomes particularly useful when they reach the tween and teen years. And no matter how adequate the closet, a child always needs plenty more storage space. The best part of a children’s armoire is the doors; it’s easy to hide things away and keep the room neat. The following guide will tell you how to choose a children’s armoire that will last through all of your child’s developmental years.

Versatile storage

Manufacturers offer children’s armoires, designed with kids in mind, in a wide variety of styles, types, configurations and colors. A well-built, multi-purpose TV/wardrobe armoire will have a number of functional and organizational features. Select an armoire that will best suit your child’s needs.

  • A children’s TV or computer armoire should have wrap-around or pocket doors so that they stay out of the way when watching television or working at the computer.
  • Especially if you plan on using and re-using the armoire, adjustable shelves will allow you to easily adapt it for a variety of uses.
  • Drawers, in the base of the wardrobe armoire or in its interior cabinet, make it easy for children to store and locate things.
  • When purchasing a TV or computer armoire, consider what kinds of features, such as an adjustable keyboard tray, storage slots for discs or cork board, will be most useful to your child.
  • When selecting a TV armoire for your child’s or teen’s room, choose one with shelves about the TV area. Depending on the size of the television, not only does this prevent from the opening from appearing too large, but it also adds more storage capacity.
  • Purchase a children’s TV armoire with a slide out panel. This will give you the option of converting it to a wardrobe armoire at a later date.
  • A removable clothing rod increases the functionality of the armoire. When the clothing rod is in place, your child can use the armoire for clothes; once removed, it makes a great TV armoire.

It Has To Look Good

A well-chosen armoire enhances the room by adding charm and sophistication. Particularly when buying an armoire for a younger child, if you want the bedroom set to last through a couple of developmental stages, choose a style that will have lasting appeal over the trendy armoire that might not be as appealing in two years. Decorating a child’s room today is an adventure. Gone are the days of yore when parents had limited choices, mostly available in basic white. Today, with all of the choices manufacturers give you, you can design your child’s room to exactly fit his or her both current and future needs.

Traditional

Lea Jessica McClintock

Traditional style has an understated elegance that is adaptable. Furnishings typically have lots of decoration, flowing lines and curved profiles. Traditional style children’s furniture is generally made of wood, with finishes that range from dark wood finishes to painted finishes in bold or pastel colors. They are often distressed for a worn or antique look. Traditional styles such as Sheraton, Queen Anne, Neo Classical French Provincial are modeled after historical fashions, periods and trends. A Victorian reproduction armoire has a fanciful and romantic feel that is perfect for princess-themed rooms; a traditional style bedroom for a child that will last until the college years; or a classic décor for a teen with discerning tastes.

A bedroom is as much a play area as a place to sleep. In addition to creating a more formal and sophisticated feel, a traditional décor has proportion and symmetry that is soothing, welcoming and inviting. A computer armoire or TV armoire is exceptionally useful in accommodating modern technology while maintaining the room’s timeless atmosphere.

Contemporary

Berg Furniture Armoire

A child’s bedroom in a contemporary style has a clean, streamlined look that is both inviting and practical. Contemporary style armoires have smooth, clean lines and can use geometric forms in unique ways. While the emphasis is on function rather than decoration, contemporary style still includes decorative elements. Contemporary furnishings are typically made from lighter woods. Profiles tend to be relaxed, lending the room a calm and uncluttered appearance.

Contemporary furniture for kids, tweens and teens is specially designed to appeal to them while being well-constructed, durable and suited to your budget. Contemporary style is comprised of several sub-styles diverse enough to appeal to many different tastes. A contemporary style armoire is simple in form while decorative detailing is stylized or spare.

Country

Alligator Enterprises Treasures

Country style is rooted in the traditional, but has been adapted from its original location to reflect newer geographic locations and regions away from major city centers. Country style furniture characteristically is made of wood with lighter wood finishes such as pine or maple, possesses simpler decorative detail and is smaller in scale. Other popular finishes range from milk-painted finishes in white and pastels to finishes that have exposed grains or are distressed.

Country style armoires are universally appealing with their unpretentious designs yet elegant and charming looks. This is a perfect choice for a child’s or teen’s room because decorative details like stenciling, a scalloped apron, blunt arrow or bun feet and wainscoting lend the décor an inviting and comfortable air. A country style TV or computer armoire will add a stylish touch while increasing the room’s functionality.

On Safari

December 9th, 2009

There is something about jungle animals that is not only exotic but is also exciting, as well. A jungle theme or safari theme is ideal for a unisex themed nursery because it can have whimsical appeal while creating a sense of adventure. Perhaps it’s the idea of gentle tropical rain that is soothing, conjuring shades of soft greens and trailing jungle vines; pools of water with exotic floating lilies; a watering hole where elephants and giraffes come to drink. Themes and motifs for a unisex nursery design are virtually limitless. What is important is to provide a beautiful, refreshing canvas for your newborn girl or boy to sleep, dream and grow.

Baby Nursery Wall Art

Non-gender specific colors like soft yellows, pastel greens and mauves or neutral colors such as beige, white, cream and taupe are good color choices for a unisex nursery. You can use deeper shades like burgundy, purple rose, forest green or buttercup yellow as accent colors for one or two walls. Or you could choose two complementary colors, one light, one darker, and separate them with a chair rail or wallpaper border. Including a chair rail into your unisex nursery décor design also adds another decorative element to the room, allowing you to display pictures and other little collectibles like jungle animals and toys. Once the walls have been painted or papered, you can introduce your theme into the décor with safari-related wall art depicting lions, elephants, tigers or giraffes.

Crib Bedding Set with Mobile

The BeBe Chic Monkey Business 4 Piece Baby Crib Bedding Set with Mobile is a perfect way to dress the crib in our jungle theme nursery. The crib bedding set has a chic sense of style. It also has stripes, solid colors and pretty patterns, giving the crib and the room a luxuriously textured feel, creating a cozy place for your baby to sleep.

Sunny Safari Hand Painted Kids

Accessories with a jungle or safari theme are plentiful and varied. Take your pick: from nursery lamps to musical mobiles to window treatments, you’re sure to find the right accessories in the colors of your choice. For a finishing touch in your unisex nursery, add a floor rug or a toy chest to your décor.

Now We’ll Say Our ABCs

November 24th, 2009

Commuter Crib 2-tone

It’s as easy as ABC to get a look for your nursery that is simple, fun and adaptable to either a boy or a girl. Literally the foundation of language, words, ideas and literature, the alphabet is the ideal theme for a little one’s first bedroom. The options are endless and many of them inexpensive, which is a bonus for new or expecting parents. If you already have a name picked out, an alphabet themed nursery is also a great way to feature the letter your baby’s name starts with by wall hangings, stenciling the name on the wall or an embroidered baby pillow.

Alphabet Nursery Theme Walls

Baby 2 Bratt Decor Dick Crib in White

There are a number of ways to go: alphabet wallpaper, an alphabet letter border, an alphabet animal border, solid paint colors or a combination of wallpaper and paint. If you designing a unisex nursery, you may want to choose colors other than pink or blue.

You could give the room the feeling of being inside an alphabet block by painting the walls a solid color and then choosing a complimentary color for the ceiling and floor.

Use craft paint to personalize the nursery with a mural based on the letters of your baby’s name.

 Alphabet Nursery Theme for Girls

baby 3 Round Canopy Baby Crib

White furniture is a popular color for a girl’s nursery. A white crib has a charming and fresh appeal. Many parents are choosing round over rectangle because it eliminates corners and baby is accessible from any side. Round cribs are typically placed in the center of the room for the best effect. This can be especially useful when decorating a smaller sized space since it opens up the room, making it appear larger.

 Round Baby Crib Bedding Set

Like the choices for wallpaper, borders and stencils, alphabet themed crib bedding is readily available. For a girl’s nursery, select bedding that’s unashamedly “girlie” with lots of frills and bows.

baby 4 Fun Time Letters & Names

Particularly if the floors are hardwood, give her someplace to comfy to play and crawl (yes, it will happen sooner than you think).

 Alphabet Nursery Theme for Boys

baby 5 4-in-1 Convertible Crib in Coffee

Baby furniture in a medium to dark finish is a common choice for a boy’s nursery. Decorative detail is more streamlined and there are not as many flourishes or curlicues. Choosing a matching change table will make it easier for you to change diapers, while giving you someplace to store all those items necessary for keeping baby dry.

4-Piece Baby Crib Bedding Set

The crib is the focal point of the nursery. Dress the crib in an alphabet-related crib bedding set. Many alphabet patterned sheets and blankets include colorful animals.

baby 7 Medium Pile Block Rug

Select floor coverings that will bring together both the color palette and theme that is in the room. Make sure that it is soft to the touch and will be gentle on baby’s skin.

Contemporary Heavy Metal Kid Style

November 19th, 2009

Hillsdale Universal Youth Metal Mirror

When decorating a room for a tween boy, there are some important things to keep in mind. The most important factor to consider is that he’s growing up, developing his own personality and experimenting with how independent he can get be. The space he calls his own should reflect that. At this age, they are discovering their likes and dislikes, especially when it comes to music. To accessorize his room, put up posters of his favorite bands, frame photos or magazine pictures of musicians who inspire him and showoff his rock n roll memorabilia or collection of musical instruments. But for the room’s décor, choose a neutral palette and metal furniture that will be contemporary, creative but most of all, just plain cool.

Color the walls neutral. Choose neutral tones like light or dark grays; white paint with black patterned wallpaper in circles or squares; or deep tans, beiges and taupes – any neutral color that will bring out the metallic look of the furniture. If you want to introduce some color into the room, cooler shades of blue with gray undertones will also work.

2 Powell Monster Bedroom® 3 Piece Set

Start with the twin Powell Monster Bedroom® Monster Metal Bed. Metal is a good material for a bed in a tween’s room. Not only will it grow with him, a metal bed is usually easy to care for, while being strong and durable. Clean lines with rounded corners and the textured metal panel create a look that is unique and stylish.

3 Mobile Storage Bench

Add the Powell Monster Bedroom® 4-Drawer Mobile Storage Bench to the end of the metal bed in place of a footboard. It will give him some place to sit when putting on shoes or practicing guitar. In addition to the nightstand and the dresser, the bench will also provide more storage, which is always a good thing in a boy’s room, tween or otherwise.

4 South Shore Furniture Cosmos Nightstand

While the South Shore Furniture Cosmos Nightstand is actually made of wood with metal accents and a built-in CD rack. But the charcoal finish tabletop gives this contemporary style nightstand a sleek metallic look that really pops.

5 Fun Rugs Black Fun Shags

There’s going to be music. Whether your tween plays his own musical instrument or listens to someone else play, it’s probably going to be loud. Choose heavier fabrics for the window treatments and, especially if there is not already a carpet in the room, a thick, plush area rug to help absorb sound and sound-proof his room.

6 Silver & Blue TV Stand

Music is an important part of his life. Include a TV stand; place to watch music DVDs and TV programs is imperative in a boy’s bedroom. Don’t forget the bean bag chair. Bean bag chairs add a fun element to the room while giving your tween a comfy place to sit and veg.

Room for Adventure: designing a boy’s room that will grow with him

November 12th, 2009

He’s ready to ditch the toddler bed and upgrade to “big boy’s room.” Now is the time to design a room for your son that will grow with him and keep you from having to start from scratch every couple of years or so. Sure, their likes, dislikes, tastes and personal preferences change faster than a speeding bullet, but there are ways to design a bedroom that will grow with him, saving you time and money in the long run.

Themes

Olive Kids Out of This World Comforter

A popular way to decorate a child’s room, either for a boy or girl, is to pick a theme. However, since from three years of age and on, little boys are in the business of growing into bigger boys, there is the danger that they will quickly outgrow the theme you have chosen. While some themes such as pirates, cowboys, outer space, baseball, racing cars and dinosaurs have a timeless appeal, to design a room that will grow with your son, limit the theme to items that can be easily replaced. Should your son outgrow his room’s original theme, if you have chosen space exploration themed bedding and matching curtains, these are easier to change than having to scrape off rocket ship wallpaper and redo the walls.

Walls

Oak Finish Bookcase Bed 4 Piece Bedroom Set

Make it colorful but don’t base the room’s décor on your son’s current favorite color in case he changes his mind next week. If you would like to include his favorite color, use it as an accent color rather than for the whole room. Avoid papering the room in a particular theme. Use a border in a particular theme instead.

To create a space that will grow with your child, the same principle applies when decorating the walls. You can advance the theme throughout the room in non-permanent ways by adding posters and pictures that can be changed or updated as required.

Furniture

Lea Deer Run Kids Captain's Bed in Brown Cherry

Select a bedroom set that is well-constructed, durable and stylish. Choose furniture in classic colors like black, dark brown or espresso.

Select as many pieces on casters as possible. This allows you (and your son) the freedom to alter the room’s configuration as his needs change. It will also make it easier to add certain pieces, like a computer desk or TV armoire when he wants someplace to study or play a computer game.

Include lots of storage options. Freeing up floor space for play and exploration is a must in a young boy’s room.

An Aesop Fable as Inspiration for Unisex Nursery

November 6th, 2009

Young America by Stanley Hampton

The classic fable about a tortoise that raced a hare and won is ideal for a unisex themed nursery. Maybe it’s because this is a tale of impossible odds that it so thoroughly captures our imagination. Perhaps it’s the idea that a turtle would even consider racing a hare that is so comical. But whatever the story’s appeal, choosing the tortoise from this delightful tale as the central character for our unisex nursery design will create a charming and whimsical backdrop for the newest addition of the family.

 Paint or Paper

Bratt Decor Casablanca Premiere Crib in Burnished Gold

Because we’re dealing with a classic story, a more traditional wallpaper treatment would be as suitable as a solid paint color such as yellow, green, mauve or burgundy. Neutral colors such as beige, black and white, taupe or navy would also be good choices for a unisex nursery. Because our main character is a turtle, browns and darker shades of green paint or wallpaper would be ideal as accent colors for one or two walls of the room. While blue is the color that is associated with a boy’s nursery, shades such as aqua and teal are great selections for a non-gender specific nursery color scheme. If you decide to just paint the walls, for that special finishing touch, include a wallpaper border with a tortoise-and-the-hare pattern.

Bedding and Accessories

Cotton Tale Slow Poke 4-Piece Baby Crib Bedding Set

Cotton Tale Slow Poke Baby Nursery Lamp

The Cotton Tale Designs Slow Poke Collection is perfect for our tortoise fable themed nursery. The crib bedding set features colorful turtles in a combination of very cool colors that will keep the décor looking fresh and new. Details are what make the Slow Poke accessories like the nursery lamp and the musical mobile so delightful, from intricately done appliqués to the wooden or fabric cut outs. Another aspect of this collection that I like so much is the mix and match way the collection uses patterns, stripes and solid colors. Tying the crib bedding to the nursery window valance to the baby nursery accent rug will make this turtle themed room totally enchanting.

Furniture for the Unisex Nursery

Bratt Decor Dick Convertible Crib in Black

Choosing a crib in black or a dark wood finish will be the perfect canvas for the delightful colors of the turtle themed crib bedding set and matching accessories. Since you will be purchasing the crib and any additional nursery furniture you might need for a unisex nursery, select furnishing with cleaner lines and a minimal amount of decorative detail.

Designing a Bedroom for Your Little Fireman

November 3rd, 2009

If your son is going through his “I want to be a fireman when I grow up” stage, why not encourage him by decorating his room in a fire station theme? There’s something very appealing and exciting about everyday heroes like fireman that is inspiring to little boys. Designing a bedroom around a fireman theme is sure to set his imagination and creativity on fire.

Standard City Park Kids Captains Bed in Cherry Finish

You probably won’t want to paint the walls fire engine red, but you can certainly choose other primary colors like blue or yellow, for your son’s room that will be the perfect canvas for bright and bold fire station themed accessories. There are also a variety of wallpaper patterns with relevant firefighting themes. If going the wallpaper route is a little too intimidating or time consuming for you, pick a primary paint color and pair it with a border. Or choose a neutral color for the walls, but bring fire engine colors into the room with your choice of a window treatment, bedding and an area rug.

 KidKraft Fire Truck Toddler Bed

For a toddler’s fireman themed bedroom, the Kidkraft Firefighter Collection would be ideal. In addition to the toddler bed, the collection includes a firefighter step stool, bookcase and a really cool fire hydrant nightstand. Even if your child isn’t a toddler, the firehouse bookcase from this series would be great in a fire station theme room for older kids.

Teamson Design Wings & Wheels Hand Painted Fire Engine Trunk on Wheels

Storage is an important element of any boy’s bedroom design. Place a trunk at the foot of the bed. It’s not only great for hiding away treasures and clutter alike, but it also provides additional seating, making the room more functional and user-friendly.

KidKraft Medium Locker in Red

If you don’t have room for storage trunk or toy chest, this locker unit is perfect for our fireman themed room. It’s a novel accent piece that could also double as a nightstand or side table. Many manufacturers offer a number of fireman theme furnishings, including fire hydrant toy boxes, firehouse bookshelves and fire truck activity table and chair sets.

Fun Rugs Fun Time Shape High Pile Fire Engine Rug

Don’t forget the floor. Especially if you have chosen to go the primary color route for your child’s bedding rather than purchasing a bed-in-a-bag set with a fireman theme, selecting an area rug with a bright red fire engine on it will help tie the theme of the room together.

Melissa & Doug Dalmatian Plush Stuffed Animal

Since Dalmatians are closely linked to firemen and fire stations, stick one in the corner of the room as a finishing touch.

Standard Meadow Gardens Twin over Twin Bunk Bed In Summer White

They can’t be together for more than five minutes without some major argument breaking out. So, you wonder, how on earth can they share a room? But you can successfully plan and design a space for siblings to share that is fun, stylish and conducive to keeping the peace.

Design the room around each child’s likes and dislikes. When planning a room that is to be shared by two (or more) children, get input from them both, but ask them separately.

Do this for all of the separate elements of the room’s design, especially when it comes to picking what kind of bed they want or choosing the main decorating theme. If one child wants the room painted purple but the other one wants their bedroom to be green, then sit them down for a consultation and have them help you come to a compromise.

Tradewins Echo Falls Twin over Twin L-shaped Loft Bed

The easiest way to make the most of the available floor space in a children’s bedroom, is to choose a bunk bed or a loft bed. The loft bed is a variation on the bunk bed and is essentially the top bunk only, providing free space beneath the bed for a study or activity area. Loft beds are available in a variety of configurations and materials. Loft beds with desks are ideal for older children. Other kinds of loft beds have built-in or free standing beds. The more elements you can include in the design plan, the more visually interesting the room will be.

Lea Spring Garden Kids Metal Bed with Optional Storage Unit

You can also define personal space for each child by using twin size beds and then accessorizing them with a toy chest for each child and their own nightstands and Dressing the beds with complementary bedding that blends with the décor but still maintains your children’s individuality is another way of defining their personal space and (hopefully) makes sharing a room as amiable as possible.

Early Childhood Resources Double Wide Kids Mobile Organizer with 12 Plastic Drawer and 1 Metal Shelf

Trying to encourage them to clean their room can sometimes be a thankless task, particularly when siblings share the same space, since it might be tempting for them to say the mess belongs to the other one. When planning a children’s room for two, don’t forget to include an easy-to-use storage system. Customize storage solutions to meet their individual requirements. Whatever combination of storage cubes, plastic bins or shelves you decide upon, make sure they are age appropriate and user-friendly.

Primary colors to use for a Girl’s Bedroom

October 26th, 2009

Decorating a child’s room can be challenging. When designing a bedroom for your child, the first thing to keep in mind that it’s not just a place to sleep. A child’s bedroom should also be a safe and fun environment where they can play, grow and be creative. But above all, the bedroom should be a place where your child will want to be.

South Shore Captain Storage 3 Piece Bedroom Set

Because children are attracted to primary colors, to plan a child’s room that she will not only want to spend time in, but also want to share with their friends, design a space that is bright and bold.

Bright and bold doesn’t just have to mean color you paint the walls of your child’s room. In today’s ever-evolving children’s furniture market, manufacturers offer kids’ furnishings in beautiful reds, greens and blues, in addition to traditional white and the standard wood finishes such as cherry, maple and oak. It shouldn’t just be functional or colorful or look good; your child’s bedroom should also be a place where she can dream and imagine.

Start with a Plan

Streamline Kids Twin Bed and Bookcase

Involve your child in the decision making process as much as possible. A simple place to start is to ask your child to help you decide on the room’s theme or focus. A child will be more inclined to accept and like a room they helped decorate.

Since your child is continually growing, you will want to design a room that will change and adapt with your child through each developmental stage.

Measure the room so that you will know exactly how much space you have to work with. You might like the idea of a wall unit that includes a computer desk and bookshelves, but if it’s going to block the window or fit only against the wall that doesn’t have any power outlets, you’ll get stuck with a piece of furniture you can’t use.

As part of the planning stage, list all the furnishings you would like to include. Make a budget. Knowing how much you intend to spend on each item will help keep your project on track.

In addition to a bed, nightstand, dresser and mirror, it is also important to consider other pieces you may want to include in your child’s bedroom. If your child likes to watch movies, consider purchasing a TV armoire as part of the room’s furnishings or if she is an avid reader, don’t forget to add a couple of bookcases.

The child’s age will automatically govern many of the planning choices you will need to make. In the interest of safety, select furniture with rounded corners, the correct height for the child’s developmental stage, and easy-to-open drawers, doors and lids.

Color Color Everywhere

Young America Cottage Bed Set

Yes, you want your girl’s room to be bright and colorful, but too much color can overload the senses.

Decide where the color will go. If you choose a primary color for the walls, select a neutral color for the furniture.

On the other hand, if the rich, bold colors of the myHaven Collection by Young America appeals to you and your child, paint the walls in a neutral shade or a soft, complementary color.

Color the Room with Accessories

Lea Elation Metal Bed Complete 5 Piece Bedroom Set

As many different studies have pointed, color has an effect on all of us, but it can really alter the mood of a child. While you want the bedroom to be colorful and cheerful, you also want it to be restful, comfortable and inviting.

Don’t clash. You will want all of the colors in the room to work together. Coordinate the room’s color by choosing bedding and a window treatment that matches or complements the walls.

If the walls and furniture are neutral, choose bright and bold accessories, like a patchwork rug, bed linens in primary colors or lampshades with a vibrant theme or pattern.

Decorating your girl’s bedroom can be an overwhelming task. But designing a space that incorporates primary colors in a whimsical or refreshing manner will help make decorating your child’s room a simple and fun experience.

Storage Solutions for Kids (and for your sanity)

October 7th, 2009

Children and their toys, clothes and just stuff in general can take over your home. You may feel that it’s a battle you will never win and you don’t plan on seeing your living room floor until they leave for college.

KidKraft-Nantucket-Storage-Bench-Pastel

Great for storage, yes, but the KidKraft Nantucket Storage Bench would make a great “window” seat as well – a perfect place to read on a rainy day

Don’t despair – there are some easy and simple ways to organize your child’s room that will help keep them on track and the rest of your home neat and uncluttered.

A mix of closed storage and open storage will provide your and your child with options – closed storage lets you hide items from view, giving the room a tidy feel; open storage allows children to see at a glance what is stored where.

Whatever you choose for your child, storage containers should be age appropriate, fun and easy to use and made of non-toxic materials. Toy organizers and storage bins should also be very accessible; if they are not, you know what will happen – everything will land on the floor or be stuffed out of sight in the closet.

Children, like adults, are tactile and love to experience different textures, colors and shapes. Choose storage bins and toy boxes that are bright and bold. There is a wide variety of storage solutions for kids to choose from – toy chests and toy boxes, toy caddies, toy organizers and storage bins.

A toy caddy is very handy, especially for younger children, for transporting toys and other miscellaneous items to and from their room to other areas of the house. Storage bins range from utilitarian and multi-purpose to fun and funky and they can have a particular theme like animals, princesses and automobiles.

Make the most of baskets – they can help you wage war on clutter. They look stylish and trendy (a bonus for you) and are user-friendly (a bonus for your kids). Adding a row of baskets or individual see-through bins to a couple of bookcase shelves creates a convenient space where kids can “stuff” things out of the way. Baskets and stackable bins can be a great way to tame an unmanageable closet and keep it organized.

A toy chest like the Teamson Design Under the Sea Hand Painted Kids Toy Chest/Box can an a whimsical element to a child's room

A toy chest like the Teamson Design Under the Sea Hand Painted Kids Toy Chest/Box can an a whimsical element to a child's room

Under the bed isn’t reserved just for monsters. Transform the space under the bed into useful storage with under-bed drawers. If your child’s bed won’t accommodate under-bed drawers, this would also be a good place for baskets or a set of storage trays for items like shoes or sports equipment.

It’s easy to forget the storage potential of the walls in your child’s room. Put hooks on the backs of doors so that they can hang up clothes, backpacks, etc. without too much effort. Hanging racks are also handy to have. Shelving units, floating shelves and shadow boxes are ideal for displaying mementoes, collectibles and other highly valued treasures. While not strictly storage related, placing a cork board or some kind of message board will give them a place to display pictures, etc. while keeping their desk or activity table free of bits of paper.

These straightforward and simple storage solutions for kids will help you to organize your child’s room easily and conveniently. Storage solutions for your child’s bedroom are good for the rest of you home, too. A wall organizer in the family room or a set of storage cubes in the hallway (one for each child) just might inspire them to put things away rather than “store” them on the floor.
