Mom to Mom Advice on What you Need in a Rocking Chair for your Nursery

I have been exclusively breastfeeding my seven-month-old, and every mom who breastfeeds knows how precious these feeding moments are. Feeding time is always a great bonding moment, whether you breastfeed or bottle-feed your baby. You’re not just giving nourishment, this is also an opportune time to shower your baby with affection!

In the months that I have been breastfeeding, I’ve found my ally with my baby rocking chair. The rocking motion plus the feeding is my foolproof way to put my baby to a sound slumber. You have several options for a rocking chair, and I’ve found that I am most comfortable using a glider rocking chair with cushions—on the back, seat, and the arm rests.

When I was picking my chair, I looked for an ergonomic design as comfort is really key for me when I’m rocking away in my chair. Design was also a priority, and I wanted to make sure that the chair went with the existing décor of my baby’s room. This is where I

actually had the most difficult time deciding. I was torn between the classic nursery rocking chair design

and a more urban contemporary modern rocking chair aesthetic.

In the end, I went for something in between for my nursery rocking chair. This one really had the “classic with a twist” look to it.

When buying your rocking chair, besides comfort and design, remember these other things, too:

A foot rest or rocking chair ottoman is also a must. It almost makes the whole chair a bed. I sometimes fall asleep myself!

Try rocking the chair and make sure that it does not have any rickety, annoying noise when you rock.

Check how much (or how little) the chair reclines. Make sure that it reclines to a comfortable angle for you.

Consider the size of the room. Some rocking chairs can be too bulky and more space-consuming.

Spills can happen, so make sure that the cushion covers are easy to clean.

The cushion cover design and color dictate the look of the chair, too. So pick the right colors and/or prints for your room. Can’t find one that matches the room? You can always have it reupholstered to a different fabric.
