French Country Nursery for a Baby Girl

January 29th, 2010

French country style recreates life as lived and enjoyed in the rural areas of France. Furniture pieces are simpler versions of more elaborate and formal French traditional styles such as Louis XIV, XV and XVI. Reflecting the casual elegance of a pastoral lifestyle, French country, while it still retains elements of drama, extravagance and elegance, integrates more informal materials such as cane, wicker and toile (twill weave fabric). French country interior design for a baby nursery is an excellent way to achieve an old world charm that is enchanting and whimsical with being too traditional.

French Country Palette

It is also a great excuse to bring the warm country colors of Provence into the nursery. Colors (from Behr) like Plum Wine and Mauve Mist are reminiscent of walks on a fall day in an orchard, while Applewine and Provence Crème are evocative of sunlight.

The Cotton Tale Tiny Tango 4-Piece Baby Crib Bedding Set perfectly captures the spirit of French country, with its mix of pastoral colors, patterns and whimsical details like the plaid ties of the crib bumper and the subtle diamond design of the coverlet. The shirred dust ruffle is elegantly layered, emphasizing the gossamer floral theme.

With its charming design, the Stork Craft Meaghan Stages 4-in-1 Convertible Sleigh Crib in White was selected to complement the Fun Rugs Supreme Collection Pink Toile Rug. White baby furniture works well with the French country interior décor; it also will make the room appear brighter.

The DaVinci Parker 2-Door Wood Baby Changer has “sleigh bed” sides, decorative feet and framed doors suggestive of an heirlooms chest you might find in a cottage in rural France. Beautiful as well as practical, it has plenty of room for all those necessary items you need to keep your baby girl dry and comfortable.

A must-have item in a French country nursery is an armoire. The Young America by Stanley Ma Marie One Door Wardrobe Armoire is delightful, with a scalloped apron, mirrored door and delicate decorative detail.

The Fun Rugs Supreme Collection Pink Toile Rug adds that gorgeous finishing touch. It brings out the colors of the crib bedding, especially the dust ruffle. It also enhances the whimsical elements of the baby furniture.

Dinosaur Dreams for a Boy Baby Nursery

January 28th, 2010

A dinosaur themed nursery is an ideal way to decorate a room for your new baby boy. Paint a mural of a prehistoric tropical rainforest to set the stage. You don’t have to be Picasso – murals can be created from stencils and are fun and relatively easy to do. If a mural doesn’t appeal to you, apply a deep, bold solid shade to the walls and then add a fun wallpaper border of colorful dinosaurs, prehistoric foliage or dinosaur bone shapes. A little imagination and some creative accessorizing will give you a dinosaur themed nursery you will be proud of.

Dino Palette

The color palette (from Benjamin Moore) is chosen to bring out and emphasize the color scheme of the crib bedding, particularly the tailored bed skirt. Select any one of these shades as the primary wall color and your nursery will be a rich and vibrant canvas for stegosauruses, brontosaurs and the odd t-rex.

The Kathy Ireland by Thank You Baby Dino Dreams Nursery Bedding Set includes all the basics like the crib bumper, sheet and bed skirt to make the crib comfy for baby. But the Dino Dreams collection also gives you the option of adding a mobile, window treatment and dinosaur-themed wall art.

Opting for country style baby furniture will give the room a warm and inviting charm without being too feminine. The rich medium wood finish of the Stork Craft Aspen Stages Cognac Fixed Side Baby Crib will complement the colors of the walls and the crib bedding.

A change table makes the nursery much more functional, especially one that can be repurposed when baby no longer needs it. The South Shore Lullaby Convertible Changing Table, with drawers and plenty of storage space, also has plenty of country style.

The warm colors of the Brink & Campman Area Rugs- Estella Collection Lava 87803 will not only give the nursery a finished look, it will also add a plush texture to the décor.

Traditional Romance for a Baby Nursery

January 27th, 2010

A romantic theme for a baby nursery is the perfect “excuse” to bring out the pastels, lace and flowers. Starting with traditional style baby furniture, the emphasis is on frills, curves, soft textured fabrics and floral motifs, especially roses. Murals, borders and stencils can include dreamy images like cherubs, trellises and hearts. Focus on creating a space that is layered and feminine, one both you and your baby girl can “sink” into.

Pink Baby Palette

Choose colors (from Benjamin Moore) that whisper pink rather than shout. The wall color sets the mood, and especially for a romantic themed nursery, you will want to select a gentle shade. Ditto for wallpaper; patterns should be pastel as well, with smaller sized designs.

The focal point of the nursery is of course the crib. The Natart Verona Classic Crib in French White and Silver couldn’t be more traditional in style or design. It has cabriole legs, decorative molding and a scalloped apron. The crib even includes a floral motif carving.

The Bratt Decor Chelsea Double Dresser/Changer in Antique Silver certainly meets all of the romantic requirements. The scrolled metal accents that include a leaf motif on the drawer fronts combined with scrolled feet make this change table/dresser beautiful to look at while giving it just a touch of whimsy.

BeBe Chic Angelica 3-Piece Baby Crib Bedding Set

Choose crib bedding that will be as soft and romantic as the décor. The BeBe Chic Angelica 3-Piece Baby Crib Bedding Set really brings a cohesive look to the other elements in the room.

You will need someplace comfortable to sit when feeding baby. The Klaussner Furniture Mahogany High Leg Reclining Chair is unabashedly romantic. It will also be a chair you can move to another room in your home when it’s no longer needed in the nursery.

For convenience sake and added functionality, put a traditional style end table beside it. The Cooper Classics Camden Cottage White Lamp Table is the perfect place to put the Mary Kate and Ashley Rosavita Table Lamp.

Designing a Noah’s Ark Themed Boy Nursery

January 26th, 2010

He’s ready to come home from the hospital and start his brand new adventure called life. But before that day arrives, now is the time to design a nursery for your expected baby boy that will give him a sense of adventure and exploring the unknown, even if he doesn’t know it yet. Choosing Noah’s ark as a nursery theme allows you the freedom to draw on a number of other popular nursery themes such as the ocean, boats and animals.

Arc Palette

Of course, we must indulge in blue, not just because it’s a nursery for a boy, but also because it is the color of the sea. These four Benjamin Moore shades will make great color choices for the walls, whether you use them by themselves or add an animals two-by-two border, ark or animal stencils or ark-themed wall art. You can also use one or more of these colors and their complementary shades to “wash” one wall with ocean waves.

In addition to a theme, choosing a particular furniture style will also give the nursery you are planning a finished look. Contemporary style, inspired by current fashion trends is ideal for a boy’s nursery because lines are simple, uncluttered and soothing. Decoration, which can be considered “girlie”, is minimal. The Tulip Piccolo Zen Crib has a distinctively contemporary look. With its Asian influences and two-tone finish, this crib also displays a unique design that is tranquil and calming.

Definitely in keeping with our contemporary interior design, the Tulip Piccolo Combo Dresser With Changing Pad in Java and French White reverses the color scheme of the crib. Especially if you are converting a smaller sized bedroom into a nursery, combining the change table and dresser is a space-saver.

The Caden Lane Classic Blue Noah Baby Crib Bedding Set is ideal for an ark themed nursery. It includes the blues of the ocean and the brown of wood of the boat. The mix of stripes, polka dots and solid colors will add texture to the room’s overall design.

Have fun adding those special finishing touches. How about the Fun Rugs California Kids High Pile Noah’s Friends Rug or the Fun Rugs Fun Time Noah’s Ark Rug for a touch of silly? Add a contemporary style bookcase; he may not need it right away, but it will be a handy place for you to put the books you will read to him.

Farm Animal Themed Boy’s Nursery

January 22nd, 2010

A farm animal themed boy’s nursery is a fun way to decorate your baby’s first room. It’s a great theme for a baby boy nursery because it involves animals, bringing a variety of shapes into the room. For this type of theme, you can pick from any number of furniture styles from Southwestern to Mission to rustic. Today, we’ll design our farm animal themed nursery by selecting a country style décor with a little touch of sophistication.

Farm Palette

Color choices (from Benjamin Moore) were chosen with the crib bedding in mind. A popular country style palette includes earth tones (Providence Olive and Shakespeare Tan) as well as the two blues (Misty Blue and Wedgewood Gray) that have more neutral undertones. This will help set the overall mood for the room, country style that is chic and trendy.

Once the walls have been painted, consider your options. You can add a wallpaper border that has a farm animal theme. You can even choose just one type of farm animal, such as cows, horses, roosters or sheep. If you’re creative and like to DIY, paint stencils of farm animals on one or two walls in brighter, accent colors that complement the crib bedding. If you’re really artistic, how about painting a barnyard mural on one wall or a section of one of the nursery walls?

The Status Furniture Milcroft Stages Convertible Baby Crib has a delightful country charm that will be a great place for your baby boy to sleep.

BeBe Chic Counting Sheep Baby Crib Bedding Set Collection

The BeBe Chic Counting Sheep Baby Crib Bedding Set Collection crib bedding set features whimsical sheep in a combination of solid colors and patterns that will give you farm animal themed nursery texture while creating visual interest.

The South Shore Furniture Sweet Morning 3246 Changing Table has a country style flavor, with its arched apron, classic round wood knobs and a warm wood finish. Especially if you’re on a budget, you might be tempted to skip the change table. But consider this: you will be changing your baby’s diaper anywhere from 10 to 15 times a day, from the time he comes home from the hospital for up one to two years afterwards. Because it eliminates crouching or bending yourself into awkward positions, a changing table is worth the investment, particularly if it can be repurposed as a dresser or storage unit.

A rug gives your nursery a finished look. The Walk On Me Kid’s Sheep Rug lends the room quirky feel. If you prefer something more neutral, select the Walk On Me Ivory Sheepskin Rectangle Rug.

Boy’s Bedroom with a Basketball Theme

January 20th, 2010

When decorating a room for a boy, using a sports theme will have a universal appeal, at least amongst other boys. Because it is such a popular theme, you will be able to choose from a variety of wallpaper patterns and borders, stencils, murals, bedding and accessories, including lamps and rugs with a sports theme. He might indeed be the next Babe Ruth or Pelé, but in the meantime he might be inspired by a room decorated with sports memorabilia.

The Skyline Bed and 3 Sport Headboard in Blue Denim Fabric is the perfect place to start. It has a simple, contemporary style that will last. While the twin bed features football, basketball and baseball, you don’t have to stick with just these three when accessorizing.

The contemporary lines of the Nexera Colori Double Dresser are smooth and clean. The two-tone finish increases your options for adding furniture pieces with either a dark wood finish or a natural finish or both.

Even when he gets past the night light stage, he’ll still have plenty of reasons to continue using the Lea iRoom Drawer Nightstand. Selected for its contemporary design and to match the dresser, it introduces another element into the room with its arched metal base.

Traditional Girl’s Room in Pink and Green

January 19th, 2010

Traditional style, inspired by fashions, trends and social customs of the past, has a distinctive look that is ideal for a young girl’s room. It is characterized by a lot of decorative detail such as intricate scrolls or curving lines, carved elements, ornate moldings and the use of leaf, shell and other classical motifs. Traditional is also a good choice for a girl’s room because it is a style with romantic and feminine aspects that will grow with her (and hopefully will save you from having to do a major décor overhaul sometime in the near future).

Pick a Color

Pink Palette Green Palette

Walls Suggestion #1: Paint the walls one color from our palette of pinks and greens (from Sherwin-Williams).

Walls Suggestion #2: Paint the walls a pale pink or green. Then choose an accent wall to paint a darker color (either pink or green).

Walls Suggestion #3: Paint half pink, half green on all the walls. Separate the two colors by a chair rail, a type of molding available at most hardware stores.

Walls Suggestion #4: For a little less formal feel, select a color from the above palette for half the walls and add white wainscoting. This will lend the décor design charm and whimsy.

Pick Some Furniture

While one type of traditional furniture might resemble any of the other sub styles, the differences can be subtle, giving the room a more or less formal or stately feel. Since the bed is the natural focus of a bedroom, the one you choose will set the mood or feel of the overall design.

The Lea Emma’s Treasures Kids Poster Bed is a beautiful example of formal traditional style, with turned posts and inlay panels and a floral motif.

While the Young America by Stanley Caroline Kids Poster Panel Bed is unmistakably traditional with its intricately carved posts and decorative molding, it does possess a more relaxed feel.

If you are decorating a child’s room that is really short on space, the Hillsdale Bristol Girls White Canopy Daybed might be the ideal space-saving solution. Especially because of the canopy bed style, even though its look is somewhat casual, it still has a traditional vibe.

The Young America Isabella Double Dresser will go with any of the three beds shown here. Adding a hutch is a wise decision in a girl’s room because a child/tween/teen can never have enough storage. The hutch also emphasizes the traditional feel of the dresser.

The Standard Diana White Wash Nightstand has traditional features that are perfectly in keeping with the overall look of our little girl’s room.

Pick the Right Accessories

You will need bedding for the bed. The Bacati Flowerbasket Comforter set in Pink/Green was specifically selected with the room’s walls in mind as well as for its floral design.

The base of this table lamp is transitional or traditional. But the best part of the Mary Kate and Ashley Create-A-Shade Small One Light Table Lamp is that you can customize it to match the colors in the room.

A rug will pull all of the individual elements in the room together. It will also keep little toes warm and toasty!

Race Car Theme Boy’s Room

January 18th, 2010

Many little boys are crazy about cars. If your son is going to be a future racing car driver, give him a room that will inspire him. A race car theme is a fun and creative way to brighten up the décor and to introduce a feeling of excitement and adventure into the room.

Decorating Ideas

Race Inspired Palette

Colors (shown here from Benjamin Moore) should be bright and bold. But you don’t have to stick to “racing” colors like red, yellow and green.

He’s going to need somewhere to sleep. For a toddler’s racing themed bedroom, the Little Tikes Lightning McQueen Roadster Toddler Bed would be perfect. A typical toddler’s bed will use a crib mattress rather than a twin size mattress.

Dress the bed in something racy like the Dream On Me featuring Disney’s Cars 4-Piece Toddler Bedding Set.

The Elite Products Locker 3 Tier Single-Drawer Nightstand with 2 Open Shelves has colors that match both the bed and the bedding chosen for the toddler bed.

Storage for toys, games and other stuff is important in a toddler’s room. Because the color scheme is perfect, the Early Childhood Resources 4 Pack Stackable Storage Trunks with Casters for Kids will be a great addition to the room. It will also be a great place for your child’s pit crew to store their gear as well. These storage bins have the added benefit of being mobile, which is another plus.

More Decorating Ideas

Stencil checkered flags on one wall.

Hang a collection of hub caps or license plates on the wall instead of pictures.

Create a racing or sports car themed mural from a photograph that has been poster-sized.

Use wall mounted shelves or wall mounted cubbies to display models of racing cars and sports cars.

Paint the walls two colors, separating them by a wallpaper border with a race car theme.
